About
Hi, I’m John
I’m a medical doctor in my final year of psychiatry residency in California.
The Wilderness Psychiatry Society began in 2022 to address a growing need for guidance of mental wellbeing in settings that lack adequate access to medical care. This realization was inspired by my background in psychedelic therapy research, experience as a ski patroller and whitewater guide, and deep curiosity for understanding the interface of mind and nature.
The Society’s current priorities include:
Connecting a network of passionate physicians, researchers, and allied professionals who have expertise and experience providing psychiatric support in wilderness settings.
Compiling a database of existing literature on psychiatric care in wilderness, austere, and disaster settings.
Providing education and guidance on mitigating risks and optimizing benefits during wilderness activities including therapeutic and recreational use of psychedelics, outdoor adventure sports, and other mindful encounters with nature.
Research, development, and publishing of standards-of-care in wilderness psychiatry.
The Wilderness Psychiatry Society brings together dedicated individuals who share a passion for understanding the transformative effect of natural environments on the human mind. Your insights and experiences are vital contributions to our growing community, and I would be sincerely grateful to hear from you.
